Taleb splits the world into three kinds: fragile, robust, and antifragile.
Fragile things fear volatility, robust things survive it, but antifragile things benefit from it.
That is a big lesson for quant work: a good strategy should not merely "survive on historical data" — it should be structured to profit from uncertainty.
Three ideas that stuck
- Volatility is not the enemy. Moderate stress makes a system stronger — markets, muscles, and minds alike.
- Do not predict; prepare. Instead of guessing tops and bottoms, build a portfolio that will not die in any scenario.
- The barbell strategy. Extremely conservative plus extremely aggressive, rather than a bland middle.
The biggest takeaway: shift attention from "predicting the future" to "benefiting from uncertainty".
